When we moved from our apartment into our house, the monthly price remained about the same, but Chicago is also a city where we have (relatively) fewer "what the actual fucking fuck?!" rent problems + we had a Very Nice apartment + we moved to a Reasonable suburb, but we still could not possibly have done it without a. my mother-in-law's incredible generosity and b. my husband out-earning me by 50%, which is where the down payment came from.
I honestly don't know what landlords are doing with that extra money. Sometimes I daydream that if I won the lottery I'd just start building rental places that are very close to at-cost.
