2023 Writing Log, Part Fifteen
- I finished the first section of my Lovecraftian monster romance story, “The New Annotated Kitab al-Azif.” I really like the structure of my Elden Ring story, which was divided into three “chapters” of roughly 1.3k words each. 1.3k words is too short for an actual book chapter, of course, but it’s a nice division for a 4k-word short story. It’s also eminently approachable for me, the world’s slowest and most ADHD writer. I find it difficult to write 2k words on the same project in a week, but I can do 1k and change.
- I bet you thought I wasn’t actually going to write smutfic about Ganon in panties, but it’s happening. If I can write 2k words about Master Kohga giving a blowjob to a banana, I can handle this. Anything is possible if you believe in yourself.
- I wrote a ridiculous mini-essay analyzing Ganondorf’s new design and posted it on Tumblr (here). I have never lost so many followers so quickly, but I regret nothing.
- I am now a staff writer for Sidequest!! I pitched two articles to the head editor, who accepted them both. One is for June, and one is for September. In the intervening months, maybe I’ll write about Ender Lilies? I’m still working on developing a thesis statement – or a lede, I guess you’d call it – but basically, I think it’s neat how the cute little girl grows tentacles.
- I did a DTIYS challenge of someone’s cute magical girl OC and posted it on Tumblr (here). The style I used was heavily inspired by Nausicäa of the Valley of the Wind, and I think I managed to channel the Studio Ghibli house style into the line art. Where I fucked up was using my usual lazy “soft ambient light” coloring instead of manning up and putting in the work to do cel shading… which actually would have been less work, come to think of it. Live and learn I guess.
This week I got my tax refund, which I used to pay a pair of plumbers to fix the pipes in my downstairs bathroom. This is not a euphemism, but I was nevertheless extremely impressed and grateful. Damn I wish I had learned practical skills in high school instead of, like, physics.
