2023 Writing Log, Part 41
- I finished the first draft of “The Sleeping Princess,” a Zelda I + Zelda II horror story about the two Zeldas of these games being drained of life but eternally unable to die. It asks the question, "What is worse than killing a child," with the answer apparently being, "Not killing a child." Kudos to Bloodborne for giving me terrible ideas. This is the sort of story that will get ten kudos on AO3 if I’m lucky, but that’s because only elite readers have good taste. It’s an excellent story if I do say so myself.
- No one asked for this, but I wrote an artist’s statement about “Love in the Time of Gloom Spawn,” my story about Calip and Tauro in Tears of the Kingdom. The story is on AO3 (here), and you can read my short essay about the story (here).
- I commissioned Sashadowart to create a portrait of Agnes from An Unfound Door. She did a fantastic job, which you can see (here). My favorite Dark Souls artist liked this illustration on Twitter, which made me really happy.
- I edited all of the mini book reviews I wrote for Women Write About Comics and posted them on my page on Goodreads. But Kathryn, you may be saying. You claim to hate capitalism, and yet you contribute content to a site owned by Amazon? My response is that we’re all tiny insects crawling across the surface of a vast chunk of rock hurtling through the void, and it doesn’t hurt anyone if I leave positive reviews of indie comics on Goodreads. There are worse ways to spend your time on earth.
- A local indie horror film festival, Philly Unnamed, hosted a small zine event at Tattooed Mom, one of the coolest venues in Philly. I tabled there and met some new friends and had a great time.
Also: I went out and voted, and Philadelphia has elected its first lady mayor. Sweet!!
