2024 Writing Log, Part 30
- I edited Chapter 20 of An Unfound Door, and I also added a bit to the end.
- I edited and posted the final chapter of my Tears of the Kingdom future timeline Zelda/Ganondorf story, Lay the Gods to Rest, on AO3 (here). I also did another set of edits on all the earlier chapters. This was a fun story. Good game.
- I commissioned Maegraeth to draw mildly spicy fan art for this story, which is extremely exciting. Once again I maintain that FFXIV artists are out in the world doing truly marvelous work. I’m looking forward to sharing this when it’s finished.
- “Everyday Heroines,” my story for the Residents of the Wild fanzine, is now on AO3 (here). I really enjoyed writing this story, and I had a great time being a part of the zine community. I made a nice promo post on Tumblr (here) featuring some extremely handsome character art by Taboonle, who always manages to knock the Linktober art challenge out of the park every year.
- My short article “Why A Link Between Worlds Is a Perfect Spooky Summer Zelda Game” is now live on Sidequest (here). It’s a quick read to begin with, but there’s an even shorter summary on the promo I posted on my public-facing blog (here) if you’re curious.
- For the promo graphic, I’m lucky to have been able to use a super cute chibi of Princess Hilda that I commissioned from LunarChibistry. If you’d like to see the illustration on its own, the artist posted it on Instagram (here). The world always needs more Hilda fan art, and I’m happy to have helped make this small but lovely contribution.
- I got started on “The Brave Tale of the Heroic Swamp Princess,” the story I’m contributing to Whispers of Hyrule, a Zelda forest fanzine. I’ve been doing a lot of research about swamps this week.
- I’m continuing to work on “The Record of the Last Heavenly Warrior,” the story about Castle in the Sky that I’m contributing to the Studio Ghibli fanzine.
- Since the Studio Ghibli zine doesn’t have spot artists for the stories, I commissioned Cheesy_Cryptid to create an illustration of one of the giant robots for inspiration. The finished illustration is (here) on Twitter (and here if you can’t access Twitter), and it’s amazing. Truly I am in moss heaven.
- I got started on my “Ten Short Free Horror Games on Itch.io, Part 2” article for Sidequest. I think I gathered a good crop of games this year.
- This has been an ongoing project, but this week I finally finished writing and editing my syllabi for the fall. I also gathered PDFs of all the new readings and set up the course websites. The beginning of the semester is still weeks away, but everything is ready to go.
- I don’t actually consider myself “an educator,” but it’s still super important to me that my classes are interesting and accessible to all of my students. Hopefully I made some good improvements regarding simplicity, clarity, and ease of use. In addition to the main syllabi, I created a set of policies for any students who encounter difficulties throughout the semester. Even if no one ends up needing the extra help, I figure that it’s always good to have a safety net.
In an effort to preserve my mental health by staying off social media this week, I once again managed to become addicted to Animal Crossing. Idk man, I just really like planting trees.
