I'm cycling between glee and shame at having done this, so it helps that the artist is cool with it. I met her at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival this past summer, and she is a huge adorable nerd.
When I write for geek websites, I say in my "about the author" blurb that I'm a Grass type pokémon trainer, and I'm thinking of commissioning this artist to do a picture of me with my team to put on my own website. But again, I'm cycling between glee and shame at the prospect. I don't think it will be a liability to have a crack in the polish of my professional persona, and in fact it's high time that I rebranded myself as someone who is interested in video games, but the secondhand embarrassment I'm feeling at my future self is intense.
If I had to guess, I'd say this guilt is coming from a lifetime of being bombarded with the "girls don't game" stereotype that only started to fade away a generation or two after mine. Like, it's cool if a guy my age plays pokémon, and it's cool if a woman five years younger than me plays pokémon, but there's obviously something wrong with a 32-year-old lady who plays pokémon. This is bullshit, of course, but still...
