2025 Writing Log, Part Eight
- I finished Chapter 5 of “What Dreams May Come,” a Zelda x Bloodborne crossover. I’ve been feeling like I have to struggle to write this story, so I’m going to put it aside for now.
- I wrote the middle section of Chapter 3 of “The Last Green Knight,” a Zelda x Arthuriana crossover. I’ve been struggling to write this too, but I’m going to keep going.
- In a refreshing change of pace, I wrote two short stories for this year’s Final Fantasy Kiss Battle.
- Closing Time (on AO3 here) is a sweet story about Tifa and Barret being working adults in love in the Final Fantasy VII Remake.
- A Man’s Home Is His Castle (on AO3 here) is a darker story about Edgar and Locke (from Final Fantasy VI of course) in which Edgar sneaks into Locke’s house in Kohlingen and gets caught.
- I posted an essay on my public-facing blog (here) about Chapter Six of An Unfound Door and the necessary disruption created by a story's villain. The post includes a chapter preview with an illustration of Agnes created by Arte072, a fantasy artist inspired by medieval fashion and illuminated manuscripts.
- I submitted an abstract for an academic paper titled “Disability and Optimistic Fungal Horror” to WisCon, which is one of the premier sci-fi conventions in the United States. Fingers crossed!
- I submitted an application for a grant to help fund the publication of a zine called “In Praise of Moss: An Argument for Sustainable Disability Positivity.” There’s no way in hell I’ll get the grant, and the rejection letter is going to sting. Still, this is the sort of ADHD workaround I need to use to motivate myself to get started on this project. Hopefully I can finish most of the work before they send the rejection.
- I posted my first review on The Comics Beat (here)! The Skin You’re In is a handsome hardcover anthology of Ashely Robin Franklin’s Texas Gothic short comics, and it’s very good – especially if you’re into botanical horror.
- This week’s post on my book review blog (here) is about Higashi Tōkyō Machi Machi, which collects a series of manga essays about the history and contemporary cityscape of Northeast Tokyo. This part of Tokyo has a reputation for being a bit old and rundown, and what I love about these essays is that they celebrate how immigrant communities have been moving in and revitalizing the neighborhoods.
- I edited a dozen recent posts on my book review blog. An annoying part of this process was reformatting the book cover images, which were displaying in a strange way on the mobile version of the site. I never noticed because I don’t look at my own blog on my phone, and I almost died of embarrassment when someone pointed it out to me. If nothing else, this was a good opportunity to go over the text as well. This week I edited all the posts from 2025.
- While I was polishing the inside of my screen, I updated my tag list (here) on Tumblr. Probably no one cares, but I care. It’s nice to think that I’ve been able to curate such a lovely collection of art.
- I’ve been too sick to spend much time sitting at a desk, but I managed to sketch a Korok relaxing on some moss. I’m not 100% happy with the result, but I finished the drawing this week. My leafy boy is (here) on Tumblr if you’d like to share the chill and relaxing vibes.
I’m still sick, and the weather is still miserable. Thankfully, this weekend is supposed to be warmer. In the meantime, I sat in bed and played one of my favorite comfort games, Ocarina of Time.
