2025 Writing Log, Part Thirteen

- I finished the third and final chapter of my Final Fantasy VII fic “What if you romanced one of the failed Jenova experiments in Nibelheim?” It’s on AO3 (here). This story has an audience of no one but myself, but I really like how it turned out. No regrets.

- I finally finished the fourth chapter of “The Last Green Knight,” a Legend of Zelda x Arthurian legend crossover. Writing Link as a viewpoint character has been difficult, and I’m still looking for a doorway into the heart of this story.

- I published a review of Daniel Johnson’s 2023 monograph Textual Cacophony, a critical analysis of Japanese internet culture between roughly 2006 and 2014. Although I’m always happy to dig deeper into the strangeness of 2channel and Niconico, this is an academic book that probably won’t be accessible to a broader audience. Still, if you’re interested, you can read my review on the Pacific Affairs website (here).

- I posted a review of Junko Takase’s novella May You Have Delicious Meals on my book review blog (here). This is a piece of literary writing that’s meant to make the reader feel uncomfortable. I’m not going to say I enjoyed it, but I appreciate how it viciously drop-kicks the inanity of feel-good “comfort food” novels. I hope it finds its audience.

- I wrote and edited a short essay titled “The Softer Side of Dark Souls Fandom,” and I submitted it to an anthology zine about “older” fandoms. My essay is about how Dark Souls fans went from being the worst people on the internet to a very chill and inclusive community. TLDR: Bloodborne made everyone gay.

- I finished a full-page Breath of the Wild illustration, and I submitted it to a video game fandom zine published out of Scotland. Published with government funding, I should add, because the citizens of some countries get to have nice things, apparently.

- While waiting for my “In Praise of Moss” zine to come back from the printer, I started collecting material for two upcoming projects. I got some Art Deco paper textures (here) and some vintage paper + leather textures (here), as well as a few new fonts.

Current events have put me in a near-permanent state of anxiety, and it’s been a rough week. Still, the sakura have started to bloom in Philadelphia, and I’ve been enjoying the warmer weather. 🌸
