2025 Writing Log, Part Fourteen

- I wrote a short (600-word) story about Link and Navi called “Listen.” This is going to be the first in a four-part series about Ocarina of Time called “Time Flows like a River.” I’m once again experimenting with second-person narration, this time for the purpose of telling four bittersweet stories about one-sided romances that just didn’t work out. I’ll start posting this series during the last week of April, maybe.

- I also wrote the second story in the series, “Soulmates.” This one is about how Link comes back to Malon; but then he must leave her for Zelda, the woman he’s destined to love. Angst ahoy!!

- I edited “Mount Hiei,” an original Lovecraftian horror story, for an upcoming self-published short fiction zine called “Strange Tales and Modern Legends.” This is actually the first piece of fiction I published, and it’s amazing how much my writing has improved since 2021.

- I got started on the zine formatting. I currently have the cover, as well as the first two stories. I also created a bookmark design and sent it off to the printer.

- I got the physical copies of my “In Praise of Moss” zine from Fireball Printing, and they’re lovely. Although I’ll need to update the photos I’m using for the listing, the zine is on Etsy (here). I also wrote a short post about the zine on my public-facing blog (here).

- And I submitted “In Praise of Moss” to a zine database called Coke Oven (here). This is a very cool little website, by the way.

- Speaking of zines, I came across a lovely review of my “Haunted Houses” zine that someone shared on their blog (here). This is incredible, and I feel so honored.

- And speaking of reviews, I published a review of Barbara Mazzi’s graphic novella Hourglass on Comics Beat (here). Hourglass is gorgeous, and it explores the full speculative potential of steampunk. It has its gears and smashes them too, all the while being incredibly stylish. I’m ambivalent about steampunk, but I love this book.

- I also got an email from, um. One of my all-time favorite artists on Tumblr. They were like, I love your reviews, do you want a PDF of my new book. Oh man. Oh wow. Yeah. Wow. Joke’s on them, I preordered their book a year ago. And I also donated a copy to my local library. And I also already wrote a review in my head, which I’m currently putting on paper. And once I send the artist an email to say that the review is published, I will probably die. But I will die happy. And I must not say at any point during this process that some of my most popular fanfic is based on their art and comics ahhhhhhhhh

- This week’s post on my book review blog (here) is about the brand-new English translation of Saou Ichikawa’s award-winning novella Hunchback. This is an intense story about the physicality of a severe disability, but it’s so good. It’s really gross and really funny, and the narrator goes off on diatribes that feel incredibly validating to me personally.

- I posted a sakura-themed drawing of a sweet little korok on Tumblr (here). It’s not the most polished thing I’ve drawn, but I just… I just really like sakura okay?!?!

I got hit by a giant wave of rejections this week. It was horrible and intense, but what can you do. In warmer and sunnier news, the sakura tree in front of my townhouse is now in bloom. 🌸
