Forest Zelda Zine
The Whispers of Hyrule
https://thewhispersofhyrule.carrd.co/
The Whispers of Hyrule is a fan zine dedicated to exploring the various forest folk that reside in the lands of Hyrule and beyond throughout the Legend of Zelda franchise and their footprint on their world.
This zine is still in the interest check stage; but, given that its theme rests comfortably on a bed of moss at the perfect intersection of my niche interests, I have already written pitches.
The Stone’s Love Song to the Moss
After the events of the Child Timeline leading to Twilight Princess, the jaded Hero of Time returns to the Kokiri Forest. He seeks the comfort of nostalgia, but he also intends to surrender himself to the Lost Woods so that his spirit may aid Zelda’s descendant. Saria finds him as he falls asleep and speaks to him of the childhood they passed among the trees. Although this story will have mild elements of uncanniness, it will primarily be about peace and rest and hope for the future.
Ganondorf’s Guide to Gardening
In The Wind Waker, the Deku Tree blames Ganondorf for the appearance of evil plants in the Forest Haven. I want to lean into this accusation and write a humorous annotated listicle authored by Ganondorf. Through his anecdotes, Ganondorf will obliquely tell the story of how Link helps the Koroks plant trees across the islands of the Great Sea. With the idea that Ganondorf is 110% committed to every ridiculous thing he does, I’d also like the article to contain decent real-world gardening advice for saltwater environments.
The Brave Tale of the Heroic Swamp Princess
I love the Southern Swamp in Majora’s Mask, and I’d like to tell the story of how the Deku Princess notices the corruption of the swamp water and ventures into Woodfall Temple. This story will contain elements of lore from the Majora’s Mask manga; namely, that the Deku Princess was in love with the Deku Butler’s son (whose corpse provides Link with the Deku Mask). In the sense that Termina exists within Link’s trauma dream, the story of the Deku Princess will reflect Link’s anxieties concerning his relationship with Princess Zelda and their difference in status.
I'm so excited about all of these ideas that I'm not going to wait to be accepted (or rejected) to start writing the stories. In fact, I've already commissioned an illustration of the Saria story and a comic adaptation of the Ganondorf story, and I'm keeping an eye out for someone to draw the Deku Princess for me. I'd love to participate in the zine if given an opportunity; but, at the same time, I think this is what people mean when they say "embrace your strangeness and write for audience of yourself and three other sickos."
