2025 Writing Log, Part 21

- I’m about halfway through Chapter 7 of What Dreams May Come, a Bloodborne-themed Zelda/Ganon story set in a Breath of the Wild future timeline where Link fails. I rearranged the story outline so that it only has nine chapters, and I also put the first six chapters through intense edits. Hopefully everything is starting to come together!

- I edited the stories in my Terrible People zine and got started on the formatting for the second edition. I also got the new cover back from the artist, and it’s spectacular. I’m looking forward to sharing this one. It has enough pages to be perfect-bound (ie, to have a spine), and it’s going to be an attractive little book. Very dark, and very handsome.

- I did some heavy edits on an essay I wrote earlier this year, “The Softer Side of Dark Souls Fandom,” and sent it to my editor at Sidequest. This essay is about how the “git gud” people went from being the worst assholes on the internet to a super diverse and LGBTQ-friendly community, and I really enjoyed working on it.

- My review of the just-released horror graphic novel The Harrowing Game has been published on Comics Beat (here). I love this book, which is strongly inspired by Junji Ito but also very much its own thing.

- This week’s post on my book review blog (here) is about Ben Whaley’s academic monograph Toward a Gameic World. Aside from the chapter where the author presents one of the most wretchedly misogynist and transphobic games of all time as a model of empathy, it’s actually a very cool and accessible collection of academic essays on Japanese video games. Idk where that one chapter came from, but what can you do.

- I drew a cute little moss creature and posted it on Tumblr (here).

I had a good time with moss and forests this past month, but now it’s hot girl summer, and by “hot girl” I mean Ganondorf. I’ve been collecting a bunch of fun references, and now I’m looking forward to once again being very weird about a fictional character online.
