The Tunnel to Summer is a romantic drama anime movie about teenagers based on a light novel. The animation is decent, but the writing isn't great. I'm going to spoil the story.

In a rural Japanese town, a 17yo boy and girl discover a magical tunnel that will grant any wish if you can walk to the other side. The catch is that time passes very slowly inside the tunnel in relation to the outside world. Both of these kids are (mildly) neglected by their families, so they investigate the tunnel and decide it's worth it to step outside the flow of time. The boy wants to bring his dead sister back to life, and the girl wants to be a manga artist. After the boy's divorced father announces that he will remarry and the girl announces that she's won a prize from a manga magazine, the boy decides to enter the tunnel alone. On the other side, his dead sister tells him to be happy with the girl, so he goes back to the real world.

Meanwhile, thirteen years have passed, so the girl is now thirty years old. Even though she only knew the boy for a few weeks in high school, she's waited for him all this time. The reward for this grown woman's patience is that she now has a 17yo boyfriend... who I assume has been declared legally dead. I hope that works out for them.

I have trouble imagining who the audience for this movie is. I mean, not me obviously, but it seems like a weird movie to watch on a date. After the movie, does one partner turn to the other and say, "Would you commit to becoming an adult virgin in order to wait for me if I suddenly disappeared without saying anything?" Because that seems like an extremely creepy thing to say.

Sometimes I'm surprised by lesser-known anime movies, but they can't all be winners.
