I have one (1) bullshit, and I am back on it

I finished my Aerith story. Huzzah!

After closing that document, I immediately opened a new one. This is the story title:

"What if you romanced one of the failed Jenova experiments in Nibelheim?"

These are the tags: Mundane Strangeness, Bizarrely Canon Compliant, No Horror Only Wholesome

I'm writing in second person, and I don't care if it's cringe. I'm having a great time.

If I'm being honest, though, I'm totally onboard with the idea of Link being evil. Like, not just a primal force of chaos, but actively evil. That would be super fun to write. Also he and Ganon should fuck about it.

But first I need to get over myself and finish the fic in front of me. Wish me luck, I guess.

One of the problems I’m having with a multichapter fanfic WIP is that I have trouble writing Link.

I can write Link in an AU where he isn’t out hunting non-government-approved “species” of people for sport. Canon compliant Link is a monster, though.

The problem with trying to work through Link’s character in fandom spaces is that people will come out of the woodwork to share political opinions that I really wish they’d keep to themselves. It’s intense, not to mention demoralizing. And worst of all, it doesn’t help me with this stupid fanfic.

How to join Avalanche, asking for a friend

I’ve been doing some Final Fantasy VII lore research for my Aerith story while trying to figure out the timeline of events prior to the beginning of the game. Like, how old was Aerith when she and her mother escaped from Shinra in the Remake timeline, and when was she first introduced to the church in the Sector 5 slums, that sort of thing.

What I ended up finding, on an absurd level of detail, was Cloud’s timeline. He was recruited by Shinra when he was 13, and he left for Midgar a few months later, shortly after he turned 14. Apparently, recruitment at this age is common, as joining the military is like going to high school. If 14yo kids don't join Shinra in some capacity, this is when they find a job and start working full-time.

Not much to say about this, besides damn. That’s fucked up.

Also, apparently the game uses the Western calendar dating system, with Cloud having been born in 1986. It’s weird to think of him being my age, but I guess FFVII is technically historical fiction set in 2007.

I want an evil house with a secret subbasement library

I was replying to a comment on a Final Fantasy VII story when it occurred to me that I would love to live in Nibelheim. I'm given to understand that it was a tough place for Tifa to grow up, but it would be perfect for me as an adult. It's got everything: big beautiful houses, a small but supportive community, lots of nature, and even a genuine haunted house with a cursed basement library.

Jesus please hold back my sinful hands

Umberto Eco wrote his 1980 novel The Name of the Rose as a play on semiotics staged by two antagonists, a detective searching for the meaning of signs and a blind theologian whose dogmatic faith lies in the mystery of symbols. As murders accumulate in an ancient abbey filled with forbidden books, the two men circle around one another, unable to communicate due to the innate emptiness of the abstract signifiers that pervade their discourse.

However, Eco subverts the thesis suggested by the closing line of the novel, that only the name of the rose will survive the rose itself, through the blunt signifier of the physicality teased by the erotic tension of Old Man Yaoi. In this paper I will

...I mean listen. The signifiers would be a lot less empty if those two old men kissed. I'm just saying.

Re: Re: Re: Malice

> I just feel like Shinzo Abe is watching a little too closely.

Come to think of it, I would absolutely write RPF of Ghost!Abe jacking off Ali Khamenei while he tries to get people to breed. Xi Jinping and Mike Pence can come too.

I'm joking, but only a little. This seems like it would be a fun story to write, and I hope the FBI agents assigned to my case would have the courtesy to leave kudos.

Anyway, here's a true story: I used to live in the beautiful Woodley Park neighborhood of Washington DC, and my apartment building was along the route that Mike Pence's motorcade took home to the vice presidential manor. My building was also right across the street from the Omni Shoreham Hotel, which is where a lot of foreign political leaders stay while on official diplomatic trips to DC. During the week when Xi Jinping was in residence at the Omni, I wrote a 10k-word RPF fic about Mike Pence making a clandestine visit. I never did anything with that extremely cursed piece of writing (obviously), but it should still be on a flashdrive somewhere. If anyone ever needs to blackmail me, though, there are probably better stories to use.

ETA: I don't mean to flex about my zipcode in DC btw. My apartment building was rent-controlled, government-assisted housing. Which is to say that all the trashy fanfic I wrote in the late 2010s was partially funded by Uncle Sam himself.

Malice

The basic premise of my Modern BotW AU fanfic novel Malice is that Zelda is romanced by one of the Blight Ganons. It's taken a human form for plot-related reasons, and it retains some of the memories and personality of the original Ganondorf, but it's still a big messy scary monster.

While editing An Unfound Door, I wanted to reference how I wrote the Blight Ganon in the first four chapters of Malice, when it's almost completely inhuman. I thought this would be a chore, but I got sucked into the story and ended up reading 50k words of it last night.

The novel is surprisingly good, and that's distressing. I'm afraid that I might have been a much better writer in 2021. It's possible that I might have been a better artist, too. Goddamn it.

This is the dark academia I'm here for

While doing research on Bloodborne lore, I stumbled across a fanfic novella that's probably the best variation on "Shadow over Innsmouth" that I've ever encountered.

It's not necessary to be familiar with Bloodborne or Lovecraft to appreciate this story, which is a grim mystery that unfolds over the course of a series of interviews. So I thought I'd share:

Re: Super Mario Bros Wonder

Before I write Super Mario porn, I'm going to write Super Mario fluff.

Here's the premise:

Having breezed through the platforming levels by using the hat badge that allows you to glide, Luigi arrives at the final castle early only to find that it’s not set up yet. Bowser invites him to talk, and Luigi confesses that he's disappointed that his green hat has become synonymous with easy mode. Bowser puts this into perspective, saying that he wants as many people as possible to see the work he's done. Then he makes a confession of his own, saying that he created the green hat badge because he wanted to spend more time with Luigi. I've got some good dad jokes lined up for this one.

I'm really enjoying the game, by the way. It's pure joy.

Research Bros

Given that life is short and each of us only has so many days on this earth, I decided to go ahead and write my story about Calip and Tauro from Tears of the Kingdom. I've been having trouble writing for the past week, but then lo and behold, suddenly words appear. It's actually kind of fun to write about fantasy academia.

In real-life academia, most people either have a drinking problem or are taking so many pills that alcohol would probably kill them. It's the sort of profession where people tend to have multiple therapists. I know this sounds funny, but it's not a joke.

Instead of the reality of what academia is, it's nice to indulge in a fantasy of what I thought it would be when I was younger. The "fantasy" isn't so much magic shrines and floating islands, but rather the idea that Calip and Tauro would actually have enough mutual respect that they wouldn't try to kill one another after every single staff meeting.

Draco in Leather Pants

“Anthro Bowser in Leather Pants” is the first story I posted on AO3 when I joined back in 2012. I was sitting in a friend’s apartment, and we had way too much to drink, and I told her that I had a crush on Godzilla.

These days, “having a crush on Godzilla” has become almost normcore, but at the time we both thought this was very, very silly. My friend was like, How would having sex with Godzilla even work, and I was like, He’d have to be Anthro Godzilla, and she was like, Do you mean Bowser from Super Mario. I remember that we laughed until we were literally crying, but then I made a point of waking up bright and early the next morning (with no hangover, isn’t it great to be young) in order to write “Anthro Bowser in Leather Pants.”

And let me tell you. I don’t get kudos on that story every day, or even most days, but it sure keeps getting kudos more than ten years later.

Malice

I have apparently fallen off the "you need to quit playing Elden Ring" wagon, and I can already feel myself gravitating toward another hundred-hour playthrough. I'm so into Elden Ring that just playing Elden Ring isn't enough, and I also want to try to finish Dark Souls. Before I start again on that mess, I decided to briefly return to Breath of the Wild just to beat it and get the little star next to my save file.

Six years later, I find most of the voice acting in Breath of the Wild to be a bit cringe, so I've been skipping through the cutscenes. Still, the (mercifully wordless) scene at the end where Zelda confronts Ganon is fucking amazing. Goddamn. It's so good. It is so, so good.

Breath of the Wild Coffeeshop AU Design References

For my Breath of the Wild Coffeeshop AU story, most of what I've been researching is how gentrification works in the neighborhoods around American universities located in urban areas. Why bother to include a Ganondorf character if you don't make him evil, you know? But I also did a bit of more lighthearted research into what the interior of the café might look like.

I was thinking about the trend of contemporary design in which brutalist concrete walls and exposed brick surfaces are softened by plants and antique furniture. This "ruins reclaimed by nature" vibe feels very Breath of the Wild to me. Here are some fun examples with lovely photography:

2021 Yuletide Letter

Dear Yuletide Writer,

Hello, and thank you for offering to fuel my obsession with the lesser-known titles in the Legend of Zelda series. I grew up with these games as a kid but only started getting into fandom as an adult, and now I find myself fascinated by the narrative exploration of the shadowy side stories and hidden corners of the Legend of Zelda universe. Instead of grand tales of heroic triumph, I want to read about the quieter and more mysterious aspects of Hyrule and its inhabitants.

I’m interested in the postapocalyptic environments of the games, as well as how they shape the lives of people and monsters alike. I love adventures, but I’m also a fan of more mundane slice-of-life stories. Light comedy is good, as is horror. I’d love to see minor characters given more expansive backgrounds, or perhaps new and interesting takes on the central characters. I would be delighted to read any story you’d be willing to share, and I’m including some writing prompts that I hope will serve as inspiration.

I love all characters and enemy creatures, so please don’t hesitate to include your favorites. I have no dislikes or preferences when it comes to ships, and I’m okay with mild romantic elements.

Thank you so much for offering to explore Hyrule with me, and I can’t wait to read your story!

Flowerblight Ganon

"I'm not going to write any more fanfic about Legend of Zelda," I said in a post a few days ago, laughing like a clown on my way to the circus.

This afternoon I sat down and wrote a complete rough draft of a short horror story about Magda from Breath of the Wild. Listen, I know it's bad to murder people, but she is planting flowers in the cursed soil of a terrible postapocalyptic world and living her best life, and I respect that.
