rynling: (Ganondorf)
I love Link and Aryll, and I love Tetra and all of her crew, and I love Makar and Rito, and I love the King of Red Lions, but Ganondorf lives at the absolute center of my heart.

Link's path is easy: follow instructions, receive help from friends, complete all of the steps in order, and achieve a tangible victory.

Zelda's path is trickier, but still feasible: pretend to be helpless while learning as much as you can, manipulate other people into helping you while undermining the people opposing you, patiently suffer temporary setbacks while always appearing to take the moral high ground, and eventually achieve a tangible victory.

Ganondorf's path is difficult and painful. While young people tend to define themselves by who and what they're fighting against, those who've come into power must struggle against something far more nebulous and insidious – the onset of systematic entropy. Maintaining the status quo is extremely difficult, and changing it is even harder. You can never know what sort of unexpected butterfly effects your actions will have, or whether what you're doing is even the right thing to do. Because change is inevitable, there is no end goal. Everything you accomplish will fade away and be replaced while you grow old and the world transforms into something you helped shape but could never fully control.
