Now that I'm starting to figure out how Photoshop works, I'm afraid I'm becoming addicted to it.

I'll just do this one layer, I say to myself, and then I'll write that letter. I'll just do this other layer, I tell myself, and then I'll respond to that email. I'll just do one more layer, I promise myself, and then I'll make that phone call.

Most of what I'm producing is garbage that isn't worth sharing, but it's a lot of fun to create, and even more fun than actually drawing things is the process of gradually figuring out what the program can do, what it can't do, and how to find tricky workarounds to compensate for what it can't do.

I can't really put my finger on why, but messing around with Photoshop feels a bit like playing a video game, and I think I'm starting to understand why there are so many young artists who are so good at it. You really need to spend a lot of hours just fooling around with the program, but I think the process of mastering it has the same sort of meditative appeal and induces the same sort of flow experience as, like, level grinding to max out all your characters in one of the PlayStation era Final Fantasy games.
