I finally, finally, finally paid off all of my debt...

So I celebrated by registering for a college class.

The class is an online course offered by the School of Visual Arts called The Art of Politics: Creating Art that Packs a Punch. It was recommended to me by a translator friend who lives in New York and takes continuing education courses at SVA regularly. I trust her good judgment, so I thought I'd give it a shot.

I'm not sure how I feel about political cartoons, but this is the only online class that's still open, and I already have a few ideas regarding what my final project might be. I'm especially excited about the possibility of drawing female political figures (such as Fumiko Hayashi, the staunchly feminist and pro-LGBTQ+ mayor of Yokohama) and female political writers (such as Arundhati Roy, the author of the novel The God of Small Things and multiple brilliant essays opposing institutionalized ethnic discrimination and transnational oligarchy in India) as Sailor Scouts. If that fails, I'm going to draw shōnen action posters of pop culture heroes (such as Michelle Obama and Ruth Bader Ginsburg) encouraging people to vote. If that fails, I'm going to draw hardcore yaoi.

It seems as though the theory and lecture component of the class will focus on the work of white male American and European artists. As much as I love art, I actually don't know much about white male American and European artists. With the exceptions of Paul Klee and Jamie Wyeth, I've never been particularly interested in Western male artists, and my formal academic training has been focused on Asia. In any case, it's going to be fun to see how the middle-aged white American male instructor responds to my weeaboo bullshit.
