2019 Weekly Writing Log, Part Six
Oct. 19th, 2019 07:55 pm- I posted the sixteenth chapter of Malice. This is a utilitarian “move the plot forward” sort of chapter, but it ends on a nice cliffhanger.
- I wrote 1,900 words of the seventeenth chapter. This chapter is much more interesting than the previous one, and I’m having a lot of fun with it.
- I wrote the second-to-last story in A Hero’s Inventory. It could use more polish, so I’m going to wait to post it.
- Prompted by some friendly people on Twitter, I wrote a meta essay about Twilight Princess. The first draft was almost 5,000 words long, but I managed to reduce it by half. I think somewhere around 2,000 words would be ideal, so I’m going to keep editing.
- I finished one of my syllabi for next semester! This is the first time I’ll be teaching a big introductory survey course, and I wrote the syllabus from scratch. I spent a lot of time thinking about what the foundational knowledge of my discipline is, as well as about the ethics of how "knowledge" is created. All of this deep lore (if I can call it that) will be lost on the undergraduates, but at least the class will be accessible and interesting (I hope) with a reasonable amount of work and a fair grading structure that accommodates different learning styles.
- I edited another four pages of my Hiromi Kawakami translation zine. My abstract was accepted to the conference, so I also went ahead and wrote the first two pages of the corresponding essay. I usually develop a version for publication after I finish writing the conference draft, but I’ve decided to do the opposite this time around.
- I edited another book review from 2018 and posted an abbreviated version on Goodreads.
- I finished two more panels of my comic about Link’s Awakening. I’ve been editing and refining the script since the beginning of the year, but I ended up completely rewriting these two panels at the last minute. The comic is getting almost no attention on Twitter, but it’s doing really well on Instagram. Social media reception is randomly generated, what can you do. This has been a worthwhile experience, I guess, but I got really tired at the end and had to force myself to sit down and draw the second-to-last panel, which was unpleasant and took a lot of emotional energy. An average of three panels per week isn’t the most efficient pace, but I think this is a good start. If nothing else, I’ve learned that I need to divide longer projects into smaller bits with at least two or three days of a break in between.
- Speaking of longer projects! I’m still working on my Ganondorf zine pieces. Progress is slow but steady. I think I’m probably going to put aside two of the four illustrations and comics I prepared for this zine in order to spend more time on the other two and avoid stressing myself out. I may also expand the 2,000 word prose piece I submitted into a proper multichapter story, but we'll see.
The first half of this week was good, and I was able to give back some positive energy to my students, my colleagues, and my creative communities. The second half of the week was absolute shit, the less said the better. I’m holding up and doing the best I can while hoping that all my friends are feeling good and doing well and enjoying nice cozy fall vibes.
