I played Evoland on my Nintendo Switch Lite during my commute this past week, and I really enjoyed myself.
It look me four hours to finish the game with 93% completion, and it took me another half hour to go back with a walkthrough and pick up the collectibles I missed.
The premise of the game is that you start at a Game Boy level of technology and, by progressing through the game, you also progress through eras of JRPG game design, from 8-bit to 16-bit to 32-bit (with an additional area inspired by Diablo toward the end). In some areas there's a gameplay mechanic that allows you to switch between 32-bit and 8-bit, and I thought that was neat. I imagine that some people might see Evoland as a little too precious, but I was impressed by how clever it is.
It doesn't hurt that Evoland is short and not too terribly difficult. Four hours is the exact perfect length of time for a game like this, which explores its concept without wearing out its welcome.
A dear friend whom I have never disagreed with in my life tells me that Evoland 2 is pretentious garbage. I hear and respect that, but I'm still looking forward to playing it. At the same time, I'm giving myself permission to drop it if it gets too extra.
