I figured out how to use the bow in a way that allows me to do a run of the game in twenty minutes, so I've been making progress in Hades. You have to clear the game ten times to get the credits, and then there's more story that you can unlock by distributing certain collectibles among characters.

Since these collectibles appear more frequently toward the beginning of the game, I thought the best way to create a stockpile is to do a bunch of suicide runs in which I play through the first stage and then kill myself by jumping into the lava at the beginning of the second stage. It turns out that you can amass resources by beating bosses under various challenge conditions, however; and, since the upgraded bow allows you to kill everything quickly without moving or taking damage, I've been doing that instead.

Level grinding is level grinding, and Hades continues to be repetitive, but it feels nice to make progress in at least one area of my life. Also there is fishing!

The character Hades becomes much more interesting as you get more of the story, but there's one flashback scene where he's having a bad day and takes it out on your character by being needlessly hypercritical. As an adult, I know exactly where Hades is coming from, but I also remember being a teenager and not understanding what was going on when teachers and bosses and managers were like this. Like, I didn't understand that it wasn't personal, and that it didn't have anything to do with me. I'm not saying Hades's behavior in this scene is healthy, of course, and you can understand why he and his son have such a tense relationship.

At the same time, I can't help but wonder if the kids are okay. Is this really how people see their fathers? Is hating your dad such a universal experience that people play this game and take the way Hades treats his son for granted as totally normal?
