These Things Happen
Apr. 6th, 2022 07:56 amThere was a feminist horror magazine that I really liked and decided to start submitting to. They rejected my submissions, but they also had interesting themes for their issues, so I figured that it was at least fun to write for them.
My latest submission was de facto rejected because the head editor decided to stop working on the magazine and take everything down with her. So no more website, no more social media profiles, nothing.
Now that I’ve started paying attention to indie lit mags, I see this happen all the time. It’s definitely not the first time I’ve gotten an email like this in the past two years.
I’ve also heard the advice of “submit where the writers you admire have gotten published.” I therefore made a list of magazines before I started thinking about submitting, and I couldn’t find half of them online or anywhere else.
What I also see is a lot of small lit mags that put a ton of love and care into maintaining their social media, but the websites where they actually publish writing look like hot garbage and/or don’t work properly.
Idk, I haven’t had much luck with these smaller magazines, and they don’t really seem to be worth it. I think that, instead of putting my time into shorter stories, it might be worth investing my energy into longer projects that have a chance at being published in more well-established magazines.
