The Adventures of Peaches, Part Twelve

After a long Covid-related absence, I went into work, where I talked with a friend who asked me about Elden Ring. He wanted to know how much I loved the final boss fight of the magic school. When I told him I didn't intend to fight Rennala, he was surprised. He then proceeded to explain what happens. I was sold. I went home and played through the boss fight, and it was one of the best things I've experienced in my life.

To make a short story even shorter, the first phase of the boss fight with Rennala is horrible and creepy in the best of ways. In the second phase of the fight, Rennala's daughter Ranni - Ranni is the blue-skinned witch that everyone on the internet loves - creates a projection of her mother at the height of her power. The fight with Ranni's projection of Rennala is fucking wild. I've seen a lot of people make comparisons to Sailor Moon, and these comparisons are apt. I've also seen people make comparisons with Bayonetta, and these comparisons are also apt.

I went through the entire spectrum of emotions during that boss fight. Just a big gay rainbow of feelings. I stan one unhinged magic mom and her bloodthirsty witch daughter.

I write a fair number of reviews, and I think about this issue a lot in very concrete and practical terms. There's always going to be a delicate balance between explaining what's interesting and compelling about a piece of media and allowing your reader the space to experience it for themselves, but I sometimes feel that the hand-wringing over "posting spoilers on the internet" may have gone a bit overboard.
