Peaches was taught this gesture by Thops, a student at the Academy of Raya Lucaria who left the school for a research trip and wasn't able to get back in. When you give Thops a spare key, he immediately returns to the magic school, where you can find him dead at a desk.
How did he die? It's unclear. Why did he die? Because this is Elden Ring, and that's what happens when you complete sidequests.
Anyway, you can find a spell called "Thops's Barrier" on his body. This spell creates a shield against magic, and its description reads as follows:
Future generations will learn. They will know the foolishness of the sneering sorcerers who ridiculed this theory, little realizing that it was in fact a discovery worthy of a new conspectus of the academy.
God I love this style of writing. Also, the people at the magic school sound like assholes. I for one respect and appreciate Thops.
