yeah, the HALT (am I Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired?) check-in can be really useful when interpersonal shenaniganry is ongoing, at least for taking one's own emotional temperature. (I have two long checklists, one for "the world is ending" anxiety attacks and one for migraines, to walk myself through why I might be feeling a way and try to corral it before it gets into someone else's emotional space. I don't always succeed but I'm getting better at it after a lot of trial and error.)
I don't know what life advice they're getting in secondary school, but I certainly never got any of that kind of useful information when I was there. I had to piece it together from discussions with friends and reading (because I was curious) in college and beyond. I might know this sort of stuff now, but it took years to figure out!
