This Isn't a Political Blog, but Goddamn
Nov. 5th, 2020 01:11 pmBeing the innocent and delicate flower that I am,
I was surprised to see that so many individual people voted for Trump in this election. In 2016, I could... sort of... understand how certain disenfranchised people might actively vote against someone they perceived to be "a Washington insider," but actively voting for Trump is a mistake that you only make once, right?
So I made my own mistake of Googling why people voted for Trump in this election, and I found a number of very upsetting interviews. To summarize what people said:
- They
- Hate
- Black
- People
Not all of these people are white, which is wild, and I've also read that a not-insignificant number of white people believe Biden (a devout Catholic) is Jewish.
I don't have any sources to link to for this, but I've been picking up a lot of chatter about the role of Facebook in spreading misinformation. Not in a direct way, but more in its facilitation of the formation of echo chambers reinforced through targeted political ads.
I vaguely remember when not being on Facebook was seen as a sign that someone had something to hide, but I'm getting to a point where I'm seriously considering deleting my account.
Anyway. As much as I complain about Tumblr, I'm happy I kept my account there. I usually don't spend much time on the site beyond checking in for ten minutes every morning to schedule a queue, but it's been really nice to decompress while immersing myself in an endless stream of video game screenshots and fan art.

I stopped actively posting to Facebook in late 2018 to save my sanity. Sometimes I popped in every other month to see how people were doing, only to be stressed out after five minutes. I'm really glad I've abandoned that hellsite.
Also, relevant to Facebook and political bullshit, there was a post a friend of mine made that had over 100 comments in less than 24 hours. I can't remember what it was about (guns, I think? something people get massively upset over), but when I was reading the comments, nothing made sense. It was like, four of the same people rehashing what they previously said, sometimes with more all caps and the like. When I asked my friend what the fuck was going on, he said, "What do you mean? We're fighting with That Guy who is Pro-The Thing I Hate and he won't shut up." And I just died, because I had blocked That Guy three years before that and couldn't see anything That Guy posted. And I was left with some Dadaist nonsense of my friends just yelling into the void. It was beautiful.
Also RE: Tumblr, I don't know what the fuck happened last night, but apparently 20+ tags blocking anything Supernatural related fuckery could not stop my dashboard unraveling into the rampant mess it is right now. But yeah, I love me some video game things 💕

Date: 2020-11-06 01:32 pm (UTC)Oh goodness. Wow. Haha wow. Okay. That explains what's going on with my Twitter feed this morning. I was very, very confused.
Also apparently Hetalia is getting a second season? This makes me feel old, but I remember when people left LiveJournal specifically to get away from the Hetalia discourse. I get the feeling that most of the "discourse" people on Tumblr already left for Twitter, and it's going to be wild to see that sort of thing on Twitter. As it stands, my Twitter feed this morning looks like some sort of postwar French surrealist drama.
