Date: 2021-02-09 03:45 pm (UTC)When something like this happened in my social circle a few years back, I made the comment of, "Just because so-and-so has bipolar doesn't entitle them to be a rampant jerk. They chose to behave that way." It was honestly sad how many of them wrote off the attitude as "well, it's the BiPoLaR" :|

Of course - of course! - allowances need to be made for young people and other people who have no prior experience dealing with a mental health crisis, but I have zero patience with the idea that neurodiverse people are essentially animals who can't differentiate between right and wrong.
Then again, I also hate the expectation that people who are struggling with mental health need to behave as if they're "crazy" in order for their assessments of their own mental state be taken seriously, and I guess I can sort of understand why some people feel the need to act out. Still... *sigh*
