UPenn has a strong culture of professors wearing suits, so I sent an email to my students in advance of yesterday's classes telling them that I respect them but that I would have to dress down for health reasons. I warned them that I might wear Crocs, and I asked them to forgive me.
A lot of my students showed up to class wearing Crocs in solidarity.
I was touched, of course, but also. Extremely surprised that so many people actually own Crocs.
