I beat FFXV Pocket Edition last night. In terms of gameplay, it gets very glitchy as it goes on, necessitating multiple hard restarts. In terms of story, it gets depressing and ends in the most ridiculous way possible. Nothing is explained, and no character arcs are completed. I can’t believe that’s the canonical ending of the game.

I mean, it isn’t, of course. The main PS4 game has multiple DLC packs that allow you to get the “true” ending. I feel that this demeans everyone involved, and I’m not interested.

I think my favorite parts of the FFXV franchise are, in descending order:

(1) the prequel series of anime shorts,
(2) the prequel CGI movie,
(3) the novel, and
(4) Pocket Edition, which is fun for a good ten hours before it gets glitchy and sad.

The novel is about Lunafreya contracting Starscourge and becoming immortal like Ardyn, and also somewhat jaded and creepy like Ardyn. Lunafreya initially tries to hide herself but is rescued by the airship commander Aranea, who teaches her how to be bisexual. Now that she has pussy-pounding demon powers and a cool new outfit, Lunafreya is approached by Ardyn, who offers to team up with her. In the ultimate act of gay and lesbian solidarity, Lunafreya and Ardyn kill god and destroy the crystal, thus eliminating the source of the Starscourge disease. No one dies at the end, and no one’s soul is trapped in a sword, and no one is immortal or has superpowers anymore. The only drawback is that presumably people now have to pay their own electricity bills, which makes sense because the crystal is clearly an analogy to nuclear power in the novel in a way that it just really isn’t in the game.

The novel is a lot of fun, but it's not half as fun as Noctis and Ignis staffing a butler café in the prequal anime. Maybe this is just me, but I think these characters work infinitely better when they’re not taken seriously.
