Could Have Been Worse

rynlingUnlike DC or New York, one of the cardinal rules of Philadelphia is “don’t go out after dark.” There’s not much to say about this, idk. There are good things about Philadelphia, but there’s also a lot of crime. It keeps the real estate prices down, I guess. But it also has concrete effects on everyone’s daily life.
Last night was a perfect 72°F, and I was happy because someone said something kind to me on the internet. I figured there might be people on the street because it was a Saturday night, so I drove to West Philadelphia and walked around a (sort of) posh neighborhood surrounding a park bordering a college campus just to enjoy the nice weather and my nice mood.
But there was no one else on the street, and it seemed like every car that passed me had to honk at me for no reason. One dude actually rolled down his window and threw a Popeye’s cup full of soda at me. That killed my buzz real quick.
This past week, someone I know who works as a librarian at a university in DC while being supported by their wealthy husband got in touch with me, saying that they want to move to Philadelphia to do a PhD. I was like, Why. Why. Why. Why. Why would you live here if you don’t have to.
This is kind of bleak, sorry. I go back and forth about Philadelphia, and right now I’m on the “someone threw a fucking soda at me last night” end of the spectrum.
