2022 Writing Log 43

- I wrote the first chapter of a Breath of the Wild coffeeshop AU. The secret hidden theme is “Good Advice Ganondorf,” and the challenge I gave to myself was to write something simple as quickly as possible. It’s probably not great, but I went ahead and posted the first chapter on AO3 (here).
- I’m still working on my Breath of the Wild Greek mythology AU, “The Ritual of Lomei Labyrinth.” I’m not sure anyone will want to read this, so I’m losing steam. I wouldn’t post it until closer to the Tears of the Kingdom release date anyway, so there’s no rush. I’d love to commission an illustration of the Zelda character in this story, but I’m not sure who to ask. I’ll keep an eye out, I guess.
- I posted a review of Emi Yagi’s Diary of a Void on my Japanese book review blog (here). This short novel about a fake pregnancy is a lot of fun, and the translation is excellent. Despite the title, there is no “void,” just sharp social commentary and “good for her” vibes all around.
- I wrote another series of mini reviews for the Women Write About Comics year-end “Best Of” lists. I really enjoy writing these shorter reviews, and I’m currently putting together a cover letter for Publishers Weekly.
- I posted a short essay on “Bad Writing Advice” (here) on my personal blog. This post originally appeared on the Get Your Words Out community (here) on Dreamwidth. I’m not sure I can contribute any of these posts next year, but I do want to comment more on other people’s posts. I’ve been really shy about leaving comments, but I was fortunate to receive a strong and positive response to my own posts on the community this year. Maybe it’s okay to be a little friendly.
- I posted a short comic about the shitty wizard professors at the shitty wizard school in Elden Ring on Tumblr (here). I also posted it on Twitter and immediately lost several followers, presumably people who were offended by my joke about using grad students as fuel for necromancy. These people are entitled to their opinion, but unfortunately they are wrong.
- I pitched a short essay about Elden Ring to one of my favorite online magazines, Unwinnable. Fingers crossed!
I devoted myself to original fiction this year, and I won’t lie – it’s been slow going. Regardless, this coming year I want to lean even harder into original work, including nonfiction. Good luck to me and all my writer friends in the new year!
