2023 Writing Log, Part One
Jan. 8th, 2023 07:38 am- I submitted the final draft of my soft horror story for the Sheikah zine. I had to get the wordcount lower, so this story really went through the wash during the editing process. It was only during my edits for the final draft that I realized the shape the story needed to take. This isn’t the sort of fanfic that usually appears in Legend of Zelda zines, and I hope it will be unique and interesting.
- I submitted the first complete polished draft of my story for the Hyrule Apocrypha zine.
- I drew a rough design of the young Ganondorf in the story. (Here it is) on Tumblr. This isn’t great. I’d like to try again once I gain a few more levels.
- Despite my good taste and best interests, I’m still writing the Breath of the Wild Coffeeshop AU. I posted the second chapter on AO3 (here). I actually agree with the advice that Ganondorf gives Yunobo in this chapter. When it comes to petty tyrants, just toughing it out isn’t going to work. I usually don’t identify with any of my fictional characters in any way, but I can’t deny that it was cathartic to put words into Ganondorf’s mouth in this one particular instance.
- I’m still writing my Breath of the Wild Greek Mythology AU, slowly but surely. I think I’m about 2/3 done.
- My pitch to Unwinnable was accepted, and I’ve been working on an essay about “The Environmental Horror of Elden Ring.” Damn it’s nice to write something I want to write when I want to write it with the knowledge that it will be published when it’s still relevant. I could get used to this.
- I created a new banner for my zine store on Etsy. (Here it is) on Tumblr, and (this is how it looks) on Etsy. I think the suggested dimensions Etsy provided for this banner aren’t correct and have resulted in poor image quality, so I should probably draw something to replace this soon. Perhaps something more thematically appropriate to the sort of soft horror stories I write, like a cottagecore murder room maybe?
I also took advantage of a sale at Costco and bought a giant tv. I bought my last tv in 2014, and wow. This is most surely an improvement. I actually had to go to Ikea to get a new stand big enough to support this monster. Now I get to play Breath of the Wild on a giant SHD tv, and it is glorious. Pics or it didn’t happen? (Okay!)

Date: 2023-01-13 01:38 pm (UTC)At the same time, I feel the same way about SHD LCD television screens that I feel about the PlayStation 5. Like, how fancy does it need to be, exactly? At what point does the expense outweigh the increase in quality, that sort of thing. I also think I might prefer smaller screens for a lot of games, and I wish I had the foresight to keep my own 42" HD LCD from 2008.
Also, fun fact: apparently a lot of newer houses and condos come with wall mounts for giant televisions pre-installed. This sounds wild to me, but maybe I'm just getting old.
