Serious content warning for violent crime.

Last night, while I was taking the corgi out on her regular 8:00pm walk, I witnessed a drive-by shooting of a kid on a bike.

True story: https://www.fox29.com/news/officials-17-year-old-male-shot-multiple-times-and-killed-in-point-breeze-2-suspects-sought

The corgi was already squatting to pee at the corner of Wharton Square Park when this happened, but it was close. Like, if I'd left the house and walked down 23rd Street even a minute later, I might have been right in the middle of the gunfire. I'm trying not to think about that too hard.

Anyway, the kid tried to escape down the sidestreet where his family's house was, but the shooters followed him until he fell off the bike. His mom ran out of the house, and she was wailing. I don't know that family, but sometimes I take the dog down that sidestreet on the way to the park, and the kid's two little sisters are always out front practicing TikTok dances. I feel so bad for all of them, but I'm not sure what to do. Like, I want to take flowers, but I don't know them, and I don't want to come off as some sort of ghoul inserting myself into someone else's grief.

Idk man. Sometimes there's nothing you can do except keep being a good neighbor when you can. I've been avoiding the Nextdoor app, which I've heard is mainly people complaining about parking, but maybe it might be worth it to try to get to know people on the block better.
