I wish they raised the bar too, but I think I understand where they're coming from.

Given that we now live in a world in which Elden Ring exists, it's going to be difficult for anyone to compete with that. Tears of the Kingdom feels a lot like Skyward Sword in that it seems to be aiming for a younger audience, thus bypassing the need to stand out in a more mature market.

Still... there are some interesting bits for the adults in the room. The various elements of Tears of the Kingdom's story and gameplay are extremely disjointed, and I suspect the developers started to go down one path before backtracking and heading in an entirely different direction. I suppose they could have scrubbed away more of the heterogeneous elements to create a cleaner game, but I'm happy they didn't.

Judging from the recent batch of developer interviews, it seems many of the game's staff actively follow online Zelda fandom. This could be delusional, but I can't help but wonder if certain subplots were suggested specifically so that the more mature corners of fandom would feel compelled to fill in the blanks. If so, then well played; it must be nice to have a massive online marketing campaign run entirely by volunteers.
