Tears of the Kingdom, Part Six

I keep telling myself that Tears of the Kingdom is a game for children, and that I shouldn’t think about the story too much. That being said, it’s difficult to be an adult and not look at Tears of the Kingdom from an adult perspective, especially when you consider that that this game was made by other adults. Like, this isn’t some indie title put together by college students and funded on Kickstarter. Multiple teams of highly-paid professionals had to sign off on the bullshit in this game, and that’s deeply disturbing to me.
Before you can get to the Lightning Temple, you have to do a sequence with Riju. I love Riju beyond measure, but I can’t deal with the story she’s forced into. The less said about this the better. Even my husband, who doesn’t care about “representation” in the slightest, had to get up and leave the room.
I wish the developers had stepped away from Breath of the Wild and taken seven years to come up with an entirely different game. Like, imagine if you got to explore the Breath of the Wild map again, but it was Ancient Hyrule. Imagine if you got to play as Zelda. Or honestly? Imagine if you got to play as Riju. It's like Riju has “Video Game Protagonist” stamped directly onto her forehead, and it’s such a shame that... Well, whatever.
Like I wrote earlier, I’m really enjoying the exploration elements of Tears of the Kingdom, but the writing could use some work. I’m going to take a break from the story and go back down into The Depths. I might even start exploring some sky islands.
