Barbie is a fun movie, I guess. Unfortunately, there aren't enough jokes. There's also too much preaching at the end. Like, way too much.

I remember people complaining that Glass Onion was "centrist," and I understood where they were coming from while not entirely agreeing. Meanwhile, I would say that Barbie is about as centrist as you can get. In fact, it's so centrist that it comes off as conservative, which made the preaching at the end feel very uncomfortable. I think the movie hand-waves its essential conservatism away by (very) subtly suggesting that it takes place during the Clinton administration, but this felt sort of gross to me. The way the movie completely went out of its way to deny the existence of queer identity also felt strange and gross.

The cast for this movie is huge, and a lot of the choices weren't great. To give an example, can you imagine what Los Angeles would look like if its demographics were: 2/3 white people, 1/3 Black people, two (2) Latinas, and one (1) East Asian. I can't, but this movie sure tries. In addition, although the theme of the movie seems to be "girl power," most of the speaking roles are men. It's almost as if they had to make up for every female character by adding two male characters. Barbie does not pass the Bechdel Test, not by a long shot.

I guess all you really need to know about the Barbie movie is that the primary scriptwriter is a cisgender straight man who says that his strongest artistic influence is Woody Allen. That's not great, and I'm also put off by all the astroturfing the studio did to make the promotion of the movie seem grassroots.

Idk man. I went into this movie expecting an awkward sex scene where Barbie calls herself a "destroyer of worlds," and I was disappointed. Simu Liu does get two extended Broadway-style musical dance numbers, though, and I can't deny that I enjoyed both of them immensely.
