2024 Writing Log, Part 23
Jun. 23rd, 2024 08:05 am- I finally finished writing and editing Chapter 18 of An Unfound Door. This chapter wasn’t included in my outline, and it has no direct relevance to the plot, but sometimes you have to give characters room to breathe and experience emotions. In this chapter, Fhiad is a pathetic worm while Agnes begins her descent into self-destruction. Hopefully their emotional development makes perfect sense within the context of the story. Maybe it’s even a little romantic.
- I got started on Chapter 12 of my future Tears of the Kingdom timeline story, Lay the Gods to Rest. This is a fun chapter in which Ganondorf conquers Hyrule by becoming a Vanderbilt-style business magnate who amasses land and wealth by cornering the railroad and logistics industries. I don’t condone this sort of behavior, but still. Good for him.
- I edited Chapter 6, 7, and 8 of Lay the Gods to Rest. They’re fairly decent chapters, if I do say so myself.
- I edited and submitted the final draft of my story for Residents of the Wild, a Legend of Zelda fanzine about the NPCs in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. This is a digital-only zine whose proceeds will be donated to this year’s Zeldathon charity, and preorders are currently open (here).
- I also edited and submitted the final drafts of my short fiction story + faux newspaper article for the 13 Days Halloween Advent zine. I think the story is going to be turned into a podcast episode, which is really cool. I haven’t seen any of the other stories, but the quality of the artwork people have been posting is way higher than it has any right to be for such a small-scale zine project.
- To help deal with my anxiety last week, I posted a call for Legend of Zelda fic drabble prompts on Tumblr. I wasn’t expecting anyone to respond, but got two fantastic prompts very quickly. In response to these prompts, I posted a short dark academia Ganon/Link story (here) and a somewhat longer story about Ganondorf and Master Kohga (here). This was fun. Maybe I’ll post another call for prompts next week. Maybe.
- I pitched an essay titled “The Optimistic Fungal Horror of Ender Lilies” to Sidequest. I also started writing the essay itself, which I’ve been threatening to do for months now. I’m not sure if it’s interesting to anyone besides me, but I’m having a great time writing it.
- Ender Lilies is such a fantastic game. It’s so good. Haters gonna hate.
- Speaking of mushrooms, I wrote a short story titled “Organic Fertilizer” about the historic University of the Sciences in West Philadelphia next to Clark Park. Given that there are fewer than a thousand students, faculty, and staff at this school, and given that almost all of the academic buildings are up for lease, I think it’s interesting that the campus landscaping is so gorgeous. Honestly, it’s kind of surreal. It would be wild if they were using the campus grounds to run an under-the-table final disposition service.
- This story is for my Strange Things Happen in Philadelphia zine. I finished the layout this week. Next week, I’ll design the accompanying merch and start on the line editing.
- I commissioned the spectacular, the amazing, and the brilliant Critter Crafter Ally, who paints highly aesthetic floral-themed monster portraits, to create an illustration on the theme of Philadelphia’s famous trash cats (ie, opossums). Ally posted the painting on Tumblr (here). If only I could be so monstrously elegant.
- I drew the second panel of my “Trees in Video Games” comic. This panel is a quick redraw of Guardia Forest from Chrono Trigger (my best and most dearly beloved). I posted a textless version on Tumblr (here).
