rynlingRambling thoughts about Miquella, Radahn, and Ranni under the cut.
I’ve always been a quiet supporter of Mohg Lord of Blood. This is mainly because I like Varré, but it’s mostly for purely aesthetic reasons. Still, the way I see it, Mohg was doing the best he could under the worst sort of possession by Miquella, the actual creepiest character in the game (except for Preceptor Seluvis).
Despite his superficial resemblance to Ganondorf, I never cared about Radahn, as I didn’t really understand who he was or what he was doing. My appreciation for Radahn was mainly limited to the viability of his strength + intelligence build, which is how my Tarnished managed to beat Malenia on the second try. It’s a good build, especially with an ice weapon.
But now that I understand Radahn was also targeted by Miquella, he’s become much more interesting to me. Even if whatever sort of relationship they had was consensual at first, there’s no way it was by the end. After all, if Radahn had accepted Miquella of his own free will, there would be no need for Miquella to possess him. In my mind, the final boss of Shadow of the Erdtree is one of the most fucked-up things in a game full of super fucked-up things (affectionate).
And now I’m wondering about Radahn, and I’m wondering what his purpose was in “holding back the stars” in relation to Ranni. How much did he know about the Eternal City, for instance? Was he trying to impede Ranni, or was he trying to aid her in some way? Were they both attempting to resist Miquella?
I also have a renewed appreciation for Ranni. What Miquella wanted to do was mind-control everyone forever, which is terrifying. Meanwhile, Ranni adjures godhood and then sets off on a spacequest so she can find and kill the source of godhood. The perfect world, for her, is one where no one has to be controlled by gods, and no one ever has to become a god (or the unwilling consort to a god).
I guess it’s a shame that Ranni had to trigger an apocalypse in order to achieve her goals, but I have a feeling the Shattering would have happened regardless. What can you do.
