I don't mind the term so much, because "walking simulator" is exactly what some of these games feel like. Then again, I don't personally think walking is boring. It's also a major part of daily life in most parts of the real world. Like, if you go to a bookstore in any city in France or Japan, there will be an entire section of local and regional walking guides. I've had people who live in Europe tell me that American "driving simulators" are boring, so it could just be a cultural thing.
Maybe "exploration game" would work better, though. It's more appropriate than "adventure game" (which implies puzzles and combat), and games that occur within a relatively confined space, like Gone Home, don't really feel like "walking simulators."
