2026 Writing Log, Part Fourteen
Apr. 10th, 2026 08:32 am- I edited and posted the fifth chapter of The Archives of Hyrule, a Tears of the Kingdom Modern AU, on AO3 (here). In this chapter, Zelda hates her job and decides to venture into the depths of the museum’s archival storage space in search of a magical artifact instead. Hooray!
- I wrote a very quick story about The Super Mario Galaxy Movie called “Bowser and Luigi’s Book Club, and I posted it on AO3 (here). This is admittedly very fucking goofy, but I really enjoyed writing it. A friend left a comment saying that Bowser and Luigi should start a book club podcast, and you know what? I would listen to every episode.
- I actually used to think of the hosts of my #1 favorite video games podcast, Watch Out for Fireballs, as Straight Ganondorf and Gay Bowser. But then it turned out that Gay Bowser is actually Bowsette, which is marvelous. No matter her gender, she’s still got that Big Dragon Energy, and I love her.
- I finished, edited, and submitted a book review of Bold Breaks: Japanese Women and Literary Narratives of Divorce, an anthology from University of Hawai’i Press (here) that combines substantial literary translations with a set of concise and accesible essays by the translators. I’d love to see more books like this honestly.
- I commissioned the powerful and majestic Tofuthebold, a professional comics colorist who also happens to be one of my favorite animal illustrators, to paint the Helmaroc King, Ganondorf’s pet murder bird in The Wind Waker. And they did such an amazing job!! You can check out this majestic creature on Tumblr (here). You can also check out Tofu’s commission info (here), and it’s worth noting that they do very cool character illustrations and Final Fantasy fan art.
- I also commissioned the magical RainbowPhilosopher to create an atmospheric architectural painting to use for the back cover of my Ruins zine. This artist does incredible environment illustrations, and this one in particular turned out really, really well. They posted the piece on Tumblr, and you can check it out (here).
- As for the zine itself – it’s now in print and in my hands! And wow, it looks fantastic. I posted the listing on Etsy (here) along with some photos, and you can download a free digital version on Itch.io (here). I also posted something like a short artist’s statement on my public-facing blog (here) if you’re curious.
I don’t know how this works for other people, but one of the weird things about writing fiction for me is that I really have to sit down, shut out the rest of the world, and put myself in a certain headspace. I’ve been neglecting this practice, and I’m getting kind of rusty. It feels very selfish to carve out that sort of “room of one’s own,” but I need to get my fiction writing stamina back!
