2026 Writing Log, Part Sixteen
Apr. 24th, 2026 08:13 am- I posted Chapter 7 of The Archives of Hyrule, a Tears of the Kingdom Modern AU, on AO3 (here). In this chapter, Zelda accidentally almost burns her face off with a Zonai flamethrower, but she’s rescued by Ganon’s timely intervention. There’s also a bit of worldbuilding as Zelda considers what the Zonai “artifacts” in archival storage might actually be in her own time, when magic isn’t taken for granted.
- I did another round of editing on Chapter 8, and I ended up rewriting a significant percentage in order to retrofit worldbuilding details established in the following chapters.
- I commissioned the marvelously sharp and stylish Bunbuncita, who is (here) on Bluesky and (here) on VGen, to create a Modern AU character design for the Zelda in this story. They did an amazing job, and they kindly allowed me to share their illustration on Tumblr (here).
- I finally finished “The Deadlands,” the Final Fantasy XII story about Ashe traversing the magically irradiated ruins of Nabudis that I’m writing for the Reins of History zine. While I was editing the story for submission to the first check-in, I realized that I never actually wrote the ending. So I wrote it, and it’s not great. But it’s okay for a first draft I think!
- With much respect to the FFXII translation team, I made an executive decision not to write "magic" with a "k."
- I also wrote the first 4/5 of “The Legendary Pictographs,” a story about Lenzo (the Windfall Island photographer who recruits Link as an assistant) for the Guiding Gales Wind Waker zine. While I was working, I made a batch of silly sketches as references for the spot artist. They’re not really worth sharing, but (this one) is my favorite.
- I wrote the thirteenth (and final, for now) piece in a series of flash fiction stories about a postapocalyptic plague doctor. In this one, he wanders through the catacombs and encounters a child skeleton eating an adult skeleton. You know, as they do.
- It’s been a while since I updated my profile picture on Instagram, so I drew a new self-portrait. I also posted it on Tumblr (here) if you’re curious. I realized about halfway through that I’m not a superfan of this art, but so it goes. Despite everything, it’s still me.
I finished up the spring semester this week. So now I’m going to be more productive, right? Wrong!! Now I’m probably going to need a few weeks to recover. But that’s okay. Life is long. There’s no rush. 🍹
