2026 Writing Log, Part Seventeen
May. 2nd, 2026 06:22 am- I haven’t written much about this project, but this week I finished a cycle of thirteen pieces of flash fiction about the gruesome misadventures of a postapocalyptic plague doctor. This was a super fun world to explore! I’m not yet sure what the future holds for this horrible little man, but stay tuned.
- I edited and posted Chapter 8 of my Tears of the Kingdom Modern AU story, The Archives of Hyrule, on AO3 (here). In this chapter, Ganon says that he thinks there were once sky islands floating above Hyrule, which seems so outlandish that Zelda is instantly suspicious. He’s right, though.
- I did another set of edits on Chapters 9 and 10 so that they’re ready to go. The first act of this story is now (more or less) finished at 20k words. For me at least, that’s a tidy bit of work for the past four months.
- I made a list of “archival artifacts” to illustrate as a tie-in to the story, and I got started on writing the accompanying text for each illustration. I’m aiming for a cross between the item descriptions in Dark Souls and the bestiary entries in Final Fantasy XII, and I think that ten pieces will be a good number. This week I wrote the text for the first five.
- Speaking of Final Fantasy XII, I did another full edit of my story “The Deadlands” before submitting it to the first check-in of The Reins of History zine. Each story in the zine is going to have something like a title page, so I also created a small spot illustration to fill the space. This is just a minor thing, so it’s probably okay to share it (here) if you’d like to see some fantasy botanical art.
- A few months ago, I pitched a Final Fantasy VII essay to Unwinnable titled “Barret Wallace Was Not Wrong.” Perhaps because of a certain event that took place last weekend (or not), one of the editors just got back to me and gave me the go-ahead to write the piece. So I got started on that; and, despite the subject matter, I’m having a great time. I love u Barret <3
- Last week’s post on my book review blog (here) is about the novella Don’t Laugh at Other People’s Sex Lives, which won a major award for debut authors back when it was first published in 2004. It’s cool that this is now available in translation, and it’s cool that the author has come out as nonbinary… but it’s kind of a stupid book tbh.
- This week’s post on my book review blog (here) is about Whispering Rooms, which collects seven stories about Marie Kondo as a fictional character. These stories are also extremely stupid, but that’s okay. However! If Marie Kondo is going to be a fictional character, I think she should use her tidying powers to solve crimes. Either that, or do crimes herself. After all, we all know what happens to things that don’t spark joy.
- Maybe I should write this story. You think I’m joking, but I bet it would be good.
- I’m hard at work on my Twilight Princess Zelda x Revolutionary Girl Utena crossover illustration. It’s a bit messy at the moment, but you can check out my current line art draft (here).
I got super out of shape and lost a lot of weight over the winter. Now that the weather is finally normal again, I’m making an effort to go on a long walk every afternoon, and it’s like I can feel my HP bar refilling in real time. Praise the sun. ☀️
