2026 Writing Log, Part 22
Jun. 6th, 2026 06:43 am- I posted The Last Heavenly Warrior, a short solarpunk story about the mossy robot gardener in Castle in the sky, on AO3 (here), and it has a gorgeous illustration from Cheesy_cryptid (who is on Instagram here). I contributed this story to New Winds, a Studio Ghibli fanzine that currently has digital + leftover sales open (here).
- I’m definitely releasing this one into the void, as I don't expect that anyone will read or engage with it, but it’s actually a very good story. I’m really proud of the work I did here, and I even made myself cry a few times. I’m such a sucker for robots who don’t fulfill their intended purpose and do something more interesting instead.
- I wrote a review of The Book of Murmurs, a new graphic novel from Fantagraphics about a girl who goes on a magical journey to a fantasy world. You probably think you know what you’re getting from that description, but this is an incredibly rich and dense story. I actually had to push back my review because, as I explained to my editor, I wasn’t expecting this book to be House of Leaves Junior. Just describing the basic outline of the plot was a challenge, and I had to do a bit of outside research, which included listening to interviews with the artist while stalking her on social media. I think I managed to do an okay job in the end, though. In any case, the review is up on Comics Beat (here).
- I’ve got a review of a minicomic zine appearing in Issue 4 of The Comics Courier, which is currently crowdfunding on Kickstarter (here). The project has already met its goal, which is a relief. This is a fun publication (I really enjoyed the first three issues), and I’m happy to see it loved and supported.
- This week I polished Chapter 11 and wrote the second 2/3 of Chapter 12 of The Archives of Hyrule, a Tears of the Kingdom Modern AU.
- I commissioned a marvelously talented character artist who goes by Licoricies (on Bluesky here and on VGen here) to draw Ganon from this story, and they did a fantastic job. If you’d like to see this handsome bastard in a sharp suit, I posted the art on Tumblr (here).
- Speaking of problematic but extremely attractive fictional characters, I also commissioned the marvelous Madvalart to create an illustration of Ashe from Final Fantasy XII as a knight in shining armor, and oh I am so in love. She posted the art (here) on Tumblr if you need some big sword energy in your life.
- As for myself, I’ve been drawing a lot of bust portraits this year. This week I tried my hand at Miss Zelda from Echoes of Wisdom, who is on Tumblr (here). She is super cute and I love her.
- I’m working on a bonus short comic for the
doodle4doodle exchange. It’s nothing special, but I think this might just be the point where drawing cute chibi characters has started to click for me. I’ve always had a lot of trouble with chibis, so fingers crossed that the skill sticks.
This week found me in an Ikea parking lot in South Philly with stars in my eyes as I loaded my car with the good shit 🌿 by which I mean a $300 Valevåg mattress. I managed to give myself something resembling a sports injury from playing Silksong, and it turns out that the healing touch I needed was some decent fucking sleep. I hope everyone who wants a new mattress is blessed with the means to get one, because damn. What a difference.
