Transistor has a rough start, but it was my experience that the gameplay became significantly more interesting at the end of the first hour. In Bastion, there were a few weapons I could never figure out how to use properly, and I suspect that the problem lies as much with the game design as it does with me. In Transistor, all of the battle skills are unique and effective, and the training/challenge area that teaches you how to use them is a lot of fun.
I was thinking of Transistor as being FFVII fanfic, but the story makes a lot more sense on its own now that I've played Bastion. I'm considering starting a New Game Plus on Bastion, seeing what happens when I make all the shitty choices at the end, and then returning to Transistor, which I vaguely remember as expanding on a similar theme of "not being able to fix things."
