Link's Awakening
Feb. 15th, 2019 08:51 amThe most recent Nintendo Direct was like a sign from the gods that I should stop faffing about and draw the Link's Awakening comic I keep saying I'm going to do. The script is written, and I have the thumbnails laid out, but...
...but honestly, my art isn't very good. Or at least not good enough to convey what I'm trying to express in an interesting and visually appealing way.
I've found that, if I commission a real artist to draw one of my comic scripts, the work can get thousands (and even tens of thousands!) of notes, which I obviously appreciate. I can't commission someone to draw this particular comic, however, because it's autobiographical and a bit embarrassing in its sincerity. I'm really going to have to do it myself, even if my garbage art makes me cringe.
On the other hand, I had a zine of my old Zelda comics printed, and it's actually kind of cool. Outside of the context of Tumblr, where professionals and hardcore hobbyists are overrepresented, my amateur art doesn't look half bad. Like, it's not awful, and maybe it's even a bit charming.
So I guess what I'm trying to say is that the most important thing is to be excited about what I do and get my work out there. Not everything has to be perfect!

Date: 2019-02-24 09:33 pm (UTC)I just received a nice order of A4 size Deleter paper from Japan, and it's gorgeous. The paper works really well with ink - much better than Bristol board - and having the margins and rulers on the sides helps tremendously. I've always been a little skeptical of people who insist on only using a certain set of tools, but I've come to find that actually having the right set of tools for the job can work wonders. In the three or four years since I started drawing, it's surprised me that American comic artists are cagey about their process, even going so far as to keep standard paper sizes as a weird industry secret, while Japanese small presses specializing in dōjinshi have step-by-step guides right on their websites. I wonder why that is...?
Anyway! Link's Awakening is one of my favorites too. I'm super happy with the way the dev team has reinterpreted the Game Boy graphics (and I'm also super happy that literally no one on Tumblr, Twitter, or Reddit is complaining about what they've done with the visual design, thank god). When I compare what we've seen of Link's Awakening to what Square Enix has done with Final Fantasy VI and Secret of Mana, I kind of want to build a small shrine and make offerings to the Nintendo gods so that they will continue to bless us with high-quality ports and remakes.
