2019 Weekly Writing Log, Part Fifteen
Dec. 28th, 2019 09:56 amI’ve completely checked out of my job intellectually and emotionally, and I pushed back a lot of deadlines to give myself some breathing room. Between one thing and another, I’m exhausted, and this will probably be the last post in my writing log for the year. Here’s what I’ve been up to recently…
- I posted Chapter 21 and Chapter 22 of Malice. The story is now a bit over 40k words, which is half a novel. I know some people can write 40k words in a three-day weekend, but this feels like a decent year’s work for me.
- I also wrote a very rough draft of Chapter 23. This initial draft is about 3k words long, and I wrote it in an uninterrupted three-hour stretch while sitting in the passenger seat of my car in a grocery store parking lot late on Christmas Eve. I think it’s an interesting and satisfying chapter that gets right to the core of the story, but it’s probably going to require about two weeks of editing.
- I also wrote outlines for Chapter 24 and Chapter 25, which will hopefully be short but compelling. These two chapters will serve as both the midpoint and the turning point of the story, so I’m considering taking a short hiatus after I get them posted.
- I was able to post an amazing illustration of my story’s version of Zelda that I commissioned from Yutaan, and Vhyrel (who drew the cover for the story) just posted a bonus illustration. Commissions can sometimes go awfully awry; but, on the flip side, there are few experiences more rewarding than connecting with an interesting and talented artist and creating good work together.
- I’m still working on Super Bowser Odyssey, which is what I’m calling my Bowser pegging fic. I was hoping to get this finished by the end of the year, but we’ll see. You can’t rush greatness.
- I’ve been doing my best to reply to all of the wonderful comments people have left on my stories on AO3. The period between Thanksgiving and Christmas is always difficult for me, and I ended up neglecting about a month’s worth of comments despite sometimes – and it’s embarrassing to admit this – reading them multiple times a day. Everyone who leaves comments on AO3 is such a hero, honestly.
- I’ve also been trying to catch up on leaving reviews on Etsy. For the holidays this year I thought it would be nice to give unique gifts and support a bunch of independent artists and creators. I know people like to make fun of Etsy (and with good reason), but this turned out to be one of the better ideas I’ve had in a while.
- I managed to log most of the books I’ve read since the beginning of 2015 on my account on Goodreads. I keep my own private records, so this project was more about busywork than any real test of memory. It was still a huge pain in the ass, though, so I don’t think I’m going to go back farther than 2015.
- I posted a short review of the newest Hiromi Kawakami translation on my book review blog, plus a slightly abbreviated version on Goodreads.
My suits have all been dry-cleaned, my dog is groomed, my plants are pruned and healthy, my refrigerator is stocked, my bills are paid, my email inbox is empty, and my apartment is spotless. I think I’m finally – finally – going to be able to sit down and play some video games.
