I bit the bullet and signed up for Duotrope. I didn't get much farther than giving them my credit card number, but I'll try to get used to it bit by bit.

I also signed up for the writing workshop I had my eye on. If you're interested, it's (this one), "Pitching Nonfiction for Publication." I'm having serious doubts about the viability of academia in the United States, but I'm still committed to public education that encourages and supports diversity and cultural literacy. That being said, I have no idea how to successfully pitch my work on non-Western media to non-academic venues, so I feel that this is something that I can benefit from.

(Where is the money going to come from? I figure that's what no-interest loans from PayPal are for. Meanwhile, I looked at what full-feature writing conferences cost, and... let's just say that this workshop is a bargain.)

I also pitched myself as a small-press comics reviewer to two magazines, and I pitched myself as an illustrator to a third. I don't think any of these three queries are going to go anywhere, but it doesn't hurt to get my name out there, especially if I use this a self-introduction that I can follow up with more specific pitches in the coming months.

I think it might also be worth setting up a professional-looking illustration portfolio website, like maybe something (like this). I might not have the most experience or polished art style, but I've been getting a strong positive response to my art and comics from various publications, so maybe it's worth putting myself out there.
