2020 Writing Log, Part Eight

- I got rejected from the Path of the Goddess zine, and this hit me surprisingly hard. I think that, because I love Skyward Sword so much, and because I love drawing Skyward Sword fan art, the affective impact was much stronger than it should have been. I spent the entire week carrying this sense of rejection around with me, and it was tough.
- But I still finished the pencilwork for the illustration I was going to submit to the zine, and this week I started inking it. It’s really cute, if I do say so myself. I hope that, after a few more zine rejections, I’ll have put together a much stronger art portfolio.
- Gosh I need a good ritual for dealing with rejection. Perhaps I should make one up myself.
- I posted Chapter 29 of Malice on AO3. Idk, maybe it was the zine rejection, but I’m starting to feel like this story is a waste of time. Maybe I’ll take a break after posting Chapter 30.
- I edited and posted Chapter 27 on FFN.
- I reached peak nerd by writing the beginnings of a glossary of some of the Zelda-themed equivalents of contemporary technology I came up with for the story. (Photoshop is "Pictoshop," for example. Also, Grindr is "Tinglr." Aren't you happy you have that image in your brain now, you're welcome.) In an earlier writing log, I mentioned possibly needing to create something like a concordance, but that seems like a lot of work. Do people use wikis for that sort of thing?
- The artist I contacted about doing a Legend of Zelda comic with me accepted the commission, put together an amazing reference sheet, and sent me the thumbnails. This is going to be good.
- I also spent time editing the stories in It Never Happened. One of them I ended up expanding substantially, and one I decided to commission an artist to turn into a comic. I asked them to do an illustration, and they asked me if it would be okay to make a comic instead. I was like, YES!!!!
- You know who would make a really good art director? This person right here! Maybe I should start looking into those sorts of positions after I move to Philadelphia.

Date: 2020-03-09 03:40 pm (UTC)I've been reading Noelle Stevenson's book The Fire Never Goes Out, which is essentially about how about her fame on Tumblr turned into actual internships and then actual real jobs and book deals. I started thinking about how nice it must be to be in a fandom that a relatively large number of people are involved in and care about, and I wonder if perhaps it's a better use of my time to devote the next month to writing a series of FFVII drabbles.
I'm not exactly sure what "a better use of my time" means in this context, except that I think it would be fun (and might be a good mini-portfolio for any FFVII zines that spring up in the next year). I've never been such a fan of FFVII that I've been inspired to write fic about it, but it might be nice to have a set of stories ready to go when the remake comes out.

I swear I feel this at least on a monthly basis, if not a weekly basis. I look at my AO3 stats from last year and how my most popular fic in terms of hits and kudos and so forth was my relatively small multichapter MCU fic right after Endgame came out. I wish I could call that home, but I find myself more attracted to what ends up being smaller, quieter fandoms and rarepairs. Which is frustrating for its own reasons, but I don't know if I'd be genuinely happy if I contributed to a massive, popular fandom.
I'm with you in the VII boat, too. It got me into the FF series, but isn't my favorite, though I still find it enjoyable enough to write the occasional fic (which is mostly Let Someone Smooch and/or Snuggle With Tifa: The Fic). I'll be curious if any of my past fics get a boost in attention when the remake comes out. I know my XII fics did when Zodiac Age came out. Also I'm eager about whatever drabbles you do for VII, so consider me intrigued :3c

Date: 2020-03-12 08:15 pm (UTC)YES. AND THESE ARE SOME VERY GOOD FICS.
Since you can't tell where your traffic comes from on AO3, I have no idea how fic gets boosted. Something something Discord maybe?
When your FFVII fic goes viral, which I certainly hope it does, and you become an internet celebrity, please remember me fondly.
