2022 Writing Log 01
Jan. 15th, 2022 09:13 amI’m trying not to feel useless, so maybe it’s time to do these weekly writing logs again.
- I wrote the first third of a story about Sonia and Leon from Pokémon Sword and Shield. It’s called “The New Kid in Postwick,” and it’s light comedic fluff about two ten-year-olds who become friends.
- I wrote the first thousand words of an original light romance story about two middle-class wizards in their forties called “The Garbage Plumbing of Anórien the Silver.” The title is subject to change. So is the wizards’ gender. I started writing them as men, but what if… they were both girls…???
- I wrote the first half of an original short horror story called “The Lotus Girl.” I haven’t decided on the ending yet.
- I edited an original piece of flash fiction called “Hydrating Mushroom Face Mask,” which I submitted to the mushroom-themed issue of a small solarpunk zine called Optopia. The story is about how I wouldn’t mind sharing my body with a parasitic fungus.
- Speaking of carnivorous plant spirits and parasitic fungi, I decided to call my next short fiction zine Decomposition: Tales of Botanical Horror. That’s good, right? I think that’s good.
- I submitted my Regrowth minicomic zine to the Salt & Honey Minicomic Content. To be honest, I don’t have any aspirations of even getting an acknowledgment of my submission, but it’s good to start somewhere. Also the contest is free to enter.
- I completed the first illustration of my “Wiztober” series. I’ve decided to save these drawings for October instead of posting them as I go along. It feels kind of nice, like hoarding treasure.
- I’ve been working on a review of a queer comic anthology called When I Was Me: Moments of Gender Euphoria. The review is only about 850 words long, and I actually submitted it to the editor on December 1. Sometimes writing is about generating words, and sometimes writing is about a whole host of other things that have very little to do with generating words. What can you do.
- I’ve also been working on a review of a book called The East Life in Kamusari. Usually I enjoy a book because I respect the decisions the author makes, but I enjoyed this book despite disagreeing with the author’s decisions. So it’s an interesting review to write.
- I wrote my syllabi and set up my course websites for this semester. I’ve stopped using paper syllabi, and everything is now 100% digital. I regret nothing.
- I repotted my precious plant babies. They don’t say much, but they still encourage me while I write.
TLDR: “But what if they were both girls” is always a valid question.
