2022 Writing Log 02
Jan. 22nd, 2022 09:04 amThere was a lot of project development and management and not much actual writing this week.
- I posted “The Legend We Create,” a short Zelda/Link story I wrote for the Fated zine. It’s on AO3 (here).
- I edited the first third of my Pokémon Sword+Shield story, “The New Kid in Postwick,” and submitted it to the first check-in of the zine I’m writing it for, Your Journey Awaits.
- I commissioned a small interior illustration for my botanical horror zine. Fingers crossed this works out. If it doesn’t, I now have a folder of reference materials.
- I drew my own botanical horror illustration, which I posted (here).
- I’m still working on “The Lotus Girl,” the story that goes with the illustration. I can’t decide on the ending.
- I finished my review of Shion Miura’s novel The Easy Life in Kamusari, and I’ll post it on the first of February.
- I wrote a short review of the visual horror novel Spirit Hunter: NG and posted it (here).
- This week marks the publication an academic reference book called Key Terms in Comics Studies, and some of my work is included. It’s not much, as I was brought into the project at the last second, but I was happy to contribute.
- I wrote an outline for the first two thirds of The Demon King. I’ll probably write the outline for the last third this evening.
- I commissioned @/arystocracys on Twitter to draw Ananth and Ceres for good luck and motivation.
- This is a bit heavy, but here goes: My experience with the Zelink zine was 95% positive, but 5% weird for reasons I don’t understand. I’ve been active on the Discord server and supportive of the project and the other writers, but I’ve still gotten something of a cold shoulder vibe. To give an example, none of the other zine writers left kudos on the zine piece I posted on AO3, and the zine account on Tumblr didn’t reblog my post of the story. It was also the only story in the zine that didn’t get a spot illustration. I’m not sure if this is because because there are a lot of people involved in the zine and I’ve been too shy to self-advocate, or because people don’t want to associate with me because I have a “problematic” interest in Ganondorf, or simply because my story just isn’t that compelling, but fuck it. I’m proud of my work and proud of having it included in such an amazing zine, so I got in touch with a Zelda fandom artist to commission my own illustration.
TLDR: Even if your work feels small and insignificant, it’s important to keep yourself motivated by taking concrete steps forward.
