2022 Writing Log 04
Feb. 5th, 2022 08:33 amIt’s been a nasty week filled with horrid snow. Despite everything, I’m keeping busy.
- I finished my original horror story “The Lotus Girl.” It’s exactly at the wordcount limit (1,500 words) for the magazine I’d like to submit it to. It needs to be edited, of course, but still. Good game.
- I finished the middle third of “The New Kid in Postwick,” the story I’m writing for the upcoming pokémon zine Your Journey Awaits.
- My essay on the environmentalist themes of Final Fantasy VII was published in Return to the Planet, a free digital zine celebrating the 25th anniversary of the game’s original release. You can check out the zine on Twitter (here) and download a copy (here). The zine is free, but there’s digital merch available if you’d like make a donation. I contributed a magazine-style quiz to the merch bundle, and it is 1990s-tastic.
- I edited and posted my review of Shion Miura’s novel The Easy Life in Kamusari on my book review blog (here). It’s a light and easy read about the fantasy of being a manly yet sensitive man who does manly yet sensitive forestry work. I wish the story were a bit more realistic, but I also make no apologies for how much I enjoyed this novel and the gorgeous language of its translation.
- StardustCindy on Instagram finished my commission for Zelda and Link from my Zelink zine story! It’s super cute, and I shared it on Twitter (here) and on Tumblr (here). I also got over myself and advocated for my story on a few fandom servers.
- Speaking of advocating for my work, I also screwed up my courage and pushed the editors at Women Write About Comics to go ahead and post my review of the LGBTQ+ comic anthology When I Was Me: Moment of Gender Euphoria. It’s a truly gorgeous and uplifting anthology, and you can read my review (here).
- I drew a second Korok for the “March of the Koroks” art collab event hosted by ZeldaCreators on Twitter. I posted it on Tumblr (here).
- I submitted an original horror story called “The Wishing Tree” to Not Deer Magazine. I discovered the magazine via Instagram, read everything they’ve published, and was inspired to write my own forest-themed dark contemporary fairy tale. My story is custom-tailored to the magazine, and I sent it to them about fifteen minutes after they announced that they opened submissions. I think my writing style, which privileges clarity over ornamentation, might not be what their editors are interested in, so I won’t be too upset if they reject my work. I can just include the story in my botanical horror zine, after all.
- I designed and printed new business cards! And I’m not crazy about them tbh. I include a card with every Etsy order, and I didn’t realize I was running out, so I had to order more on the fly. I’m usually more on top of things, but I don’t actually get that many orders on Etsy, so it never occurred to me that I was running low on business cards. Anyway, for the next batch, I’d like to put more thought and care into the design.
- I commissioned a one-panel comic illustration of Ananth and Ceres from The Demon King. This is a comic I wanted to draw myself, but one of my favorite artists in the entire world opened Valentine’s commissions, and I couldn’t resist. I’m trying not to brag about how happy I am, but honestly this serotonin has been what’s been keeping me afloat this week.
- And! I started writing The Demon King again. It’s slow going, but it feels good to be back.
Not much else to report. I’m just writing and playing Breath of the Wild. Good times.
