I got sick, and a week of my life vanished. I’m still getting back on my feet, but this is what I’ve been up to.

- I rewrote the first chapter of The Demon King. Not quite from scratch, but close. It was fun. These characters are shitty and awful people, and I love them.

- I edited an original short horror story called “The Lotus Girl,” but I think I need to edit it more before I submit it. It will be rejected either way, but I still want to send the magazine the best work I have.

- I’ve been working on a research essay about The Wind Waker that might become the first chapter of the book I keep saying I’ll write. It’s slow going. I can only handle about a paragraph every day.

- I got started on my fifth Wiztober illustration. The first four are cute, but this one is straight-up horror. Basically, now that I’ve figured out how to draw trees, there’s nothing stopping me from drawing a murder forest. The universe of these illustrations is fairly dark underneath the surface, so I guess it’s fine.

- And finally! I posted “The End of the Line for the Shinra Corporation,” my essay for the Return to the Planet Final Fantasy VII zine. You can find it (here) on AO3. I made a banner illustration to help promote it, which you can find on Twitter (here).

That’s not a lot, but I couldn’t eat or sleep for a solid eight days. It wasn’t great, and I also got more rejection emails. Mostly I’ve been playing video games. It’s just like that sometimes.

I hope you are feeling better! Being sick is awful and having rejections pile in on top of it is insult to injury in a way, even though ostensibly rejections are part of the writing life. Still gross.

You still did a ton!
