I played Elden Ring this week! I died a lot!! I also did some writing and drawing.

- I’ve been writing The Demon King. I found a way back into the story, and I finished a rough draft of the second chapter and a slightly more polished draft of the third chapter.

- I edited my original horror story “The Lotus Girl” one final time and submitted it to Hecate Magazine.

- I’m working on a new original horror-themed piece of flash fiction called “The Flower Ritual.” There’s a specific magazine I’m inspired by and want to send this to. I’ll let it sit for a week or two so I can edit it properly before submitting it. Fingers crossed the magazine doesn’t reject it, but if they do, I can put the story in my botanical horror zine.

- I did a second set of edits on “The New Kid in Postwick” and submitted it to the third check-in of the Your Journey Awaits Pokémon fanzine. I don’t spend much time on Discord, but people have been posting the sweetest and loveliest work to the zine server. I wish I had the energy to do more than lurk, because this project has been a constant source of joy and encouragement.

- I posted an essay titled “Writing While ADHD” to the Get Your Words Out community here on Dreamwidth. I’m not sure if this essay is any good, but I couldn’t find anything better online. In fact, some of what I found while I was doing research was truly fucking offensive. What I said in my own essay is that a lot of the current writing culture, which emphasizes high wordcounts and being online all the time, is actively hostile to most people with ADHD, so you have to be aware of that and be kind to yourself. I’ll probably post this essay on my public-facing blog in early April.

- Speaking of dealing with ADHD, it’s actually been super helpful to have concrete class policies that accommodate neurodiversity this semester. Everyone benefits, and the students have been submitting good work. Some of the other professors in my department have told me to keep an eye out for certain “problem” students, and I’m like, “Yeah actually they’re doing totally fine.” I mean obviously I didn’t say it like that, but still. I finally finished all the grading I’ve been putting off, and I’m delighted by how smart and talented my students are.

- I posted a slightly more cogent review of Spiritfarer (here). Probably no one cares what I think about a two-year old indie game that’s already been universally praised and celebrated, but I care. It’s a good game okay.

- After receiving excellent and insightful editorial feedback, I returned to my reviews of Comrade Himbo and Pixels of You to give them an extra layer of polish. The review of Comrade Himbo is scheduled to be posted on Women Write About Comics next week, and fingers crossed that the Pixels of You review makes it through proofing and out into the world soon.

- I’m slowly working on an illustration that has unintentionally become a self-portrait. I wanted to draw an interior with a lot of plants, and I was like, “There should be a person in the picture as a focus point, but what sort of unbalanced person would live in a house full of plants.” And then I was like, “Oh right, that’s me.”

- I have a ton of comic scripts and thumbnails for The Demon King that I never did anything with. I decided that I really liked one panel from a scrapped project, so I posted it as a stand-alone illustration on Tumblr (here). I think I’m getting better with backgrounds and interiors maybe?

My husband and I managed to successfully close on a house last week, and we’re so fed up with our landlord that we went ahead and hired movers for next weekend. I’ve been trying to pack up the apartment while staying out of “bitch you live like this?” territory, but it’s a lost cause. Fuck it. Things are just going to have to be messy.

Congrats on the house!!

Moving is messy no matter what and if anyone is giving you shit about that, they can fuck straight off, honestly.

The one thing I like about moving is watching the cats be in Box Paradise, so I get that.

Doing a bit at a time is helpful to long term energy and enthusiasm, but yeah, then it goes on for SO LONG and feels like you'll never be free.
